About Caerlaverock Castle
Situated in Dumfries on the south western route into Scotland this thirteenth century castle played an important role in the wars between Scotland and England.
The castle has a rare triangular plan with a double towered gatehouse and strong imposing towers on the other two corners (one of which is now gone).
Our view shows the moat and south-west tower with its impressive machicolations projecting from its parapet. During a siege stones and other objects could be thrown from here at an enemy.
The building is now in the care of Historic Scotland.
