About Carisbrooke Castle
Situated almost in the centre of the Isle of Wight, Carisbrooke Castle has been a defensive site for over a thousand years.
Charles I was held prisoner here before his trial and execution. Our view is of the main gatehouse on the western wall. The two great drum towers date back six centuries to the Hundred Years’ War with France. The drawbridge has been replaced by a modern stone bridge.
The building is in the care of English Heritage.
