About Framlingham Castle
This Sussex castle was one of the first in England to be built without a keep, relying on the strength of its walls and thirteen connecting towers to keep the enemy at bay.
Queen Mary I was proclaimed queen here in 1553 while awaiting the downfall of the Lady Jane Grey’s ill-fated attempt to claim the Tudor throne. Our view is from the west and shows the high curtain walls and five of the surviving towers.
The building is in the care of English Heritage.
