About Tantallon Castle
On a rocky headland overlooking the Firth of Forth and the North Sea this East Lothian castle once guarded the eastern coastal route to Edinburgh.
Built in about 1370 by the powerful Douglas family it has been a picturesque ruin since attacked by the army of Oliver Cromwell in 1651. Our view is from the west featuring the massive curtain wall above the steep cliffs. The Bass Rock, home to many sea birds, stands in the mouth of the Firth on the right.
The building is now in the care of Historic Scotland.
