About Caernafon Castle
This is the largest of the castles built by King Edward III to subdue north Wales after his overthrow of the Welsh Princes. It was only partially built when it suffered its first siege in 1294 and was overrun in a Welsh revolt. Once completed this massive fortress and royal residence did not fall again until it was taken by Parliamentary forces during the English Civil Wars in 1643.
Our view is of the north side of the castle, overlooking the mouth of the River Seiont where it joins the Menai Straits. Five grand towers, (the largest is the Eagle Tower on the left), are reflected in the waters of the river.
The building is in the care of historic environment service of the Welsh Government (CADW).
